Why Is Fiber Better Than Cable/DSL?

RS&I is Fiber HQ, and we enable our Authorized Dealers all across the country to sell the best services in their local market. But some consumers may ask, “Why Fiber, and why should I care?”. Here’s a quick rundown of what Fiber means for your customers, and the incredible selling opportunities available to you.

Fiber = FAST

The first thing anyone considers in an internet service provider (ISP) is speed. Users want to be able to stream, game, work, and connect with people without interruptions due to their connection or provider. With more usage of 4K video streaming, video calls for work and personal, speed, and bandwidth become increasingly more important every single day. Fiber Internet is simply the fastest and most reliable connection available. Fiber Internet offers speeds up to 5Gbps (Gigabits per second), upload and download. Cable internet only gets users an average speed somewhere between 10 - 500 (Megabits per second). Which means Fiber provides speeds up to 10 TIMES faster than the upper end of cable speeds.

Furthermore, cable and DSL connections have factors working against the speed a user will actually experience at any given time. If there are a lot of other users in the area using the network at the same time, everyone will experience slowdowns. That means during peak hours, streaming quality degrades and connections can drop. However, because of the technology used in fiber (a literal fiber-optic cable to transmit data at the speed of light), it doesn’t matter how many other households in the area are using the internet. A Fiber connection gives a user the same consistent speed their service plan allows for, regardless of how many other people in their neighborhood are connected. Plus, Fiber speeds are symmetrical, meaning a customer’s upload and download speeds are equal. With Fiber, the days of having a fast download speed but painfully slow upload speed are gone.

Availability and Cost

When residential fiber was first becoming available to consumers, the cost of service was often much higher than cable or DSL options in any given area. However, that has quickly become a thing of the past. With wider availability and new fiber cables being laid every single day all across the US, customers in many markets may even be able to pay LESS for a BETTER service than what they’re currently getting with cable/DSL.

Better Reliability

Fiber internet is far less susceptible to interference and outages than cable or DSL. This is because fiber optic cables are made of glass, which is not affected by weather or outside electromagnetic signals. This means fewer dropped video calls, fewer instances of stream buffering, fewer online games interrupted, and simply a better overall experience!
