Three Tips for Building a Successful Sales Team

If you’re going to succeed as a business owner, a strong and effective sales team is key. You want to bring people into your business who you can trust and rely on to work hard, follow processes, and work well with others around them.

It can seem difficult at times to start or expand your sales personnel – use these three tips to get started in the right direction.

 

Hire for Hunger and Culture

Obviously, experience, skills, and education are important factors in hiring for any role. But perhaps even more crucial are personality traits. To be effective in selling, a person must have a hunger for success. Salespeople can come from all walks of life and there isn’t a single blueprint for what makes a great salesperson, but here are some main personality traits to look for:

  • Able to deal with rejections
  • Self-driven
  • Flexible/adaptable
  • Good communication (including listening!)

Equally important though, it’s wise to look for people whose personalities will mesh well with you/others on your team. You’re going to spend a lot of time and effort with the people you work with, so it’s important that everyone can get along with each other well. After all, selling is all about building relationships with your team and your customers, so make sure your sales teams are good at it.

 

Empower and Show What Success Looks Like

Provide your salespeople with effective training and clear goals to work towards, and then trust them to get the job done. This gives your employees a sense of ownership over their accomplishments, leading to a more engaged and productive sales staff. Referrals

If you have one or two outstanding people on your team, wouldn’t you want to replicate their successes into a larger list? A person who is sharp and good at what they do will almost always surround themselves with connections/friends who hold similar values and work ethics, and they’ll be excited to bring those people to you. Establish a referral program within your company, along with a reward for existing employees who bring other effective people to your business.
