The Power of Residential Solar

Harnessing the energy of the sun has been around for a very long time, and in recent years residential solar power has become increasingly popular as people become more aware of the cost savings associated with producing their own electricity and the environmental benefits of this renewable energy. Almost everyone has seen a solar panel, but many may not know how it works to provide something so incredible!

How Does Solar Power Work?

Residential solar power works by capturing energy from sunlight and converting it into usable electricity. Solar panels are installed on a home's roof or in another location that receives ample sunlight. These panels contain photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity.

This DC electricity is then sent to an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the type of current that can be used to power every electrical device in a home.

Any excess electricity that is produced can be stored in batteries for later use at the home it was generated, or sent back to the public power grid for credit on the homeowner's electricity bill.

What Are the Benefits of Residential Solar Power?

One of the main benefits of residential solar power is that it allows homeowners to produce their own electricity, which can result in significant cost savings over time. By generating their own power, homeowners can reduce their dependence on the public grid, and shield them from the constant price increases that electric companies choose to impose. Americans in all walks of life and economic situations are looking for ways to save money every day, and going solar is a great way to do that!

Additionally, residential solar power is a clean and renewable source of energy that produces no greenhouse gas emissions. It’s no secret that eco-friendly lifestyles become more popular every day. While we already covered that going solar can help homeowners save money, a recent study even found that 66% of Americans are actually willing to pay more for sustainable products and lifestyle choices! By reducing the amount of electricity that needs to be produced by fossil fuels, residential solar power can help to lower the impact households have on the environment.

Finally, installing residential solar panels can increase the value of a home. Studies have shown that homes with solar panels are likely to sell for a premium over those without.

Limitations to Solar?

There are of course limitations to everything. The main limitation of solar is that it obviously requires ample sunlight to be effective. However, despite what some may think, solar panels can still be very effective at producing electricity in cloudy and even snowy conditions!

Upfront costs of installing solar panels can also cause concern for many homeowners, but through available financing options, governmental incentives, and more, the upfront costs shouldn’t be a roadblock for anyone.
